This guide is designed for school IT administrators to be able to setup Career Central
within their school. It provides an overview of Career Central, and the key decisions
to make about the implementation of Career Central.
Overview of Career Central
Career Central is a digital platform that supports Careers Advisors to develop and manage student career plans.
Career Central is integrated with CareersNZ to keep the database of occupational information always up to date. The program is web based for anywhere, anytime access. Careers staff can customise pages to suit your school and tailored to suit different year levels. Career Central can be used school wide for both career counselling and academic conferencing.
Requirements to run Career Central
Before we get started, you must ensure that your school meets the following requirements:
• Your school has a fast, reliable internet connection.
• Students are able to access the internet in some manner (i.e. from their own
device, or from a school based computer).
• Students have access to Google Chrome (preferred), or Safari.
• Your school has some way for third parties to authenticate users.
• Your school is able to provide IT support to ensure that students and staff are able
to access the internet.
• You use KAMAR, MUSAC, PCSchools, and/or your school uses Google or Microsoft SSO for Authentication.
Career Central & Your School’s Data
Career Central requires student and staff information to run. This includes basic student information, such as Name, User ID, Username, & School Email. It also requires staff information such as Names, Titles, Emails, Usernames, Group-classes and more. Additional features of Career Central, such as timetabling and NZQA result analysis require relevant information.
The process to send this data to Career Central is normally an easy one, and is normally achieved by using a listening service within your school management system.
Key Part 1: Data
As outlined above, Career Central needs data from your school to work. In the following pages we outline how to send data to Career Central.
Key Part 2: Authentication
Students and Staff need to be able to login to Career Central using their existing school credentials. There are a number of use cases and setups that schools throughout New Zealand use.
These include using their school management system, such as KAMAR to handle student user accounts, and by setting the password for the account inside KAMAR. Other setups include having a separate active directory, and students use their active directory password to login. This may or may not be setup to work with online services.
If you don't use KAMAR please email support@cc.school.nz explaining your school’s setup.
Step 1:
You are going to need a KAMAR Authentication Code from Career Central support.
If you don’t already have it, get it now by emailing support@cc.school.nz
Be sure to include your name and phone number as we may need to call you. Once you have this, continue with setup.
Step 2:
Open KAMAR and navigate to
Main Menu => Setup => KAMAR => Server => Directory Services
Step 3:
Create a ‘New’ Service and select the ‘Other’ option.

Step 4:
Fill out the fields:
Name: Career Central
Schools: Tick the school number your school uses (normally 1)
Address: kamar.data.cc.school.nz (Note: this is new, ensure you are using this address)
Username: Leave Blank
Authentication: Enter the KAMAR Authentication code from support here
Include NSN: Untick this box
Tick all the boxs, as indicated in the diagram below.

Step 5:
Press check to make sure the connection is working.
Please do not send full updates during school hours - as this will place a huge load on you KAMAR server. After school hours, please press the send full update button once to test.
Note: The update process is run on the server and may take a while to complete before you see anything happening.
KAMAR & different authentication
Please choose from one of the following options.
I use KAMAR & Student passwords are stored in KAMAR
You are done!
I use KAMAR & Student passwords are NOT stored in KAMAR
Choose from one of the following.
I use Google SSO or Microsoft SSO (i.e. G Suite) for Students
Go to Section [2].
I use none of these, but another common service I think Career Central should support.
Contact Us.
[2] GOOGLE AUTHENTICATION SETUP.
Do your students login to Google or Microsoft using their school email address? For example:
9072@mc.school.nz ?
If the answer is yes - then please email us and let us know. We will link the ‘domain’
(i.e mc.school.nz) to the student authentication portal, allowing students who sign in
with their studentid @ matchingdomain to be authenticated into the system.
If you have a different setup, where the username is not the student ID number, then
please contact us to discuss options about this.
If your school uses a domain forwarder, and students think their Google Account is
say 9072@wc.nz instead of 9072@schoolfullname.school.nz then this may cause
confusion when students go to login to Google. Please let us know if this is the case.
Please read Additional notes
Additional Notes
PASSWORD SECURITY
Career Central recommends that you develop a strong password policy for your
school. This includes enforcing a minimum length and a password change policy.
STUDENT IMAGES
By default, Career Central downloads and stores student images for use on the Staff
Portal. If you do not wish for this to happen, please notify us before signing up. Note
that normally, you must have permission to store & distribute student images.
NSN NUMBERS
Career Central will NEVER ask for these numbers, and please ensure that these are
not sent with any API.
NON SSL APIs
We request that all schools install and enforce SSL on all API endpoints. This mainly
refers to KAMAR’s Parent Portal endpoint.
CAREER CENTRAL STATUS PAGE
You can view the status of Career Central at help.cc.school.nz .
DATA INTEGRITY WITH KAMAR
We encourage you to check that the correct data is loaded into KAMAR for key users.
For example, ensure that the ‘email’ field in a staff user contains the work email of the
staff user, if this is what they use at school.
GROUP CLASS DETECTION
Once your school’s data sync is working, we will manually enter the Group Class
timetable codewords into our system to allow group teachers access to their
students. This may take up to 72 hours.
Creating Links to Career Central
We encourage you to create a link in one or more of the following places:
• Learning Management System (e.g. Moodle)
• Desktop Shortcut
• Homepage of Student Landing Page
• Start Menu Icon
